“FORGOTTEN STORIES -

A Woman from Urzecze”

2024

Dimensions: 112x89cm

Technique: raw-edge applique, free-hand embroidery and quilting, acrylic and alcohol fabric paints, cotton; work based on an archival photo of IS PAN.

In creating this patchwork, I carefully chose fabrics and colors that reflect the traditional style of Urzecze folk costume.

The vivid reds, blues and greens pay homage to the natural beauty of the region, while the delicate floral patterns allude to the community's agricultural roots.

The girl depicted in the portrait is wearing a white embroidered shirt and a colorful corset with distinctive piping, which are essential elements of traditional Wilanese dress. The intricate black floral embroidery on the white shirt is characteristic of the region. Her posture exudes strength and pride, embodying the character of the people who have inhabited this suburban area along the Vistula River for centuries.

As I embroidered the various details on this portrait, I felt a deep sense of connection to my ancestors and a responsibility to preserve their heritage. I hope this work will serve as a reminder of the importance of documenting our cultural heritage and inspire others to discover and celebrate the traditions of this region.

Through art and storytelling, we can ensure that the traditions and customs of our ancestors are not forgotten. I hope that this portrait will evoke a sense of nostalgia and pride in all who see it, and preserve the culture of the Urzecz for generations to come.
