“SAINT HUBERT”
03.2023
dimensions: 97x112cm
Technique: applique with raw edge, free-hand quilting and embroidery, fabric acrylics, I used Scan'n'cut scanner/plotter to cut out the applique
The art quilt depicts the moment of the apparition to Hubert of Liège of a white stag with a cross between its horns. This amazing event took place on Good Friday and was a turning point in his life. Until then, the man had led a hulking lifestyle, trying to cope with his grief over the recent loss of his spouse. This meeting contributes to a change of course in Hubert's life - from that moment on he converts to Christianity, gives away his possessions and studies theology.
Saint Hubert is considered the patron saint of hunters, foresters, horsemen, as well as epileptic patients, lunatics, athletes and mathematicians. He is a symbol of moderation, modesty and reason. Given the events of recent years, it is worth remembering this figure and his message.
The work was based on a postcard published by the J. Dekert Lubuskie Museum in Gorzow Wielkopolski. I was able to rely on it courtesy of Mr. Zbigniew Korzeniowski.
The head of the History and Art Department of the Lubuskie Museum, Krzysztof Jędrzejczak, provided me with information that the stained glass window was realized according to a design by a German artist. It was made in the workshop of Puhl and Wagner in the early 20th century. It is mounted in the window frame of one of the rooms of the former factory owner's villa, which today houses the Lubuskie Museum.
The patchwork will be on display during the post-competition exhibition “Tell me a story.”
